Creating Safe and Beautiful Stone Surfaces

Baker’s Floor and Surface refinishes stone elevator cab floor in Cupertino

When business people, customers, or apartment residents step into an elevator, they rarely think twice about the elevator floor. Most tend to feel secure and confident in their safety. But, with any surface, especially a high traffic area, like an elevator, floors can wear down and safety compromised.

Baker’s Floor and Surface was recently hired to refinish a stone elevator cab floor in a building in Cupertino, California. Before we started the project, we taped out the area and stripped existing finishes, coatings, and sealers with specialized remover and stripping agents. Then, we cleared foreign matter from the surface by dusting and wet mopping. The stone surface was in disrepair, so we honed all corners and edges using 50 grit diamonds, followed by 100, 200, and 400 grit diamonds. Then, we feathered the edges into the main floor and honed the main floor the same way we honed the corners and edges. We used power floor machines to remove scratches and imperfections. Finally, we polished the stone, based on the customer’s preference, by applying a controlled amount of polishing vitrification fluid with a weighted orbital electric floor machine. This type of machine creates a natural sheen and clarity on the stone and helps prevent slipping. When the job was complete, we used a simple dust mop to remove unwanted particles and used a microfiber cloth and stone conditioner hand polish to detail the hard to reach places. This project took approximately 16 hours (2 man days) to complete.

It’s extremely important that elevator floors be kept clean, free of debris, cracks, and hazards. Elevators are used constantly over the course of the day. This means they need to be completely safe for everyone who uses them.
